In July 2003 AARF conducted its first free spay/neuter clinic in Anguilla.  The goals of the pilot program funded by AARF, Puppy Angels and The Pegasus Foundation, were to:

    a)     Spay/Neuter approximately 100 animals including cats and dogs.

    b)     Raise public awareness of the advantages of spay/neuter.

    c)      Increase public awareness of companion animal health issues and disease prevention including annual vaccinations, heartworm and ehrlichiosis.

    d)     Provide support and awareness for Government initiatives including the Dog Act 2001.

Our very successful program in 2003 brought us further funding from The Pegasus Foundation and Puppy Angels in 2004.

Volunteers Althea and Bob Turner Transport Animals from Blowing Point Village for Surgery

In 2005 AARF met with Dr. Vanterpool and a decision was made to hold ongoing clinics as a way to control the unwanted pet population. Dr. Vanterpool does surgery almost weekly at this time and the AARF adoption list is up to date regarding the number of animals that need surgery.

We also have many animals that come for surgery that are based on need and our LeHigh Fund – established in memory of David Johnson and the monies from our collection boxes thru out the island contribute to those surgeries. Almost 28% of the surgeries performed in 2007 have been need based. AARF relies on Dr. Vanterpool or Amy to make decisions about need based surgeries, although if you are aware of an animal that you feel needs the surgery and know the owner isn’t able or willing to bring the animal in AARF will certainly entertain any requests – our purpose is after all stopping the births of unwanted puppies and kittens here in Anguilla.

Since July 2003 when our spay/neuter program began thru July of 2007 AARF has sponsored surgeries for more than 800 dogs and cats on Anguilla!

That total includes 131 Cat Spays, 344 Dog Spays, 114 Cat Neuters and 181 Dog Neuters.

Considering that in 7 years one unspayed female cat and her offspring could produce 420,000 kittens and one unspayed female dog and her offspring could  produce 4,372 puppies  - we do indeed have much to be proud of!
