The AARF logo shows three animals on a yellow AARF life raft, floating on the sea with gray clouds; sunlight peeks down on them, representing hope.

Ground Lizards

Anguilla Ground lizards

The Anguilla Bank Ameiva or Caribbean Ameiva (Ameiva plei) is a lizard species in the genus Ameiva. It's a good sized lizard found all over the island. Learn more about them from a few sources such as:

  • Anguilla Life Lizards article
  • You'd expect a Wikipedia article, and you'd get one.

Anguilla has other interesting creatures:

  • More reptiles! Find out about other Anguillian slithering, swimming and crawling reptiles (amphibians thrown in for free)
  • We’d like to highlight another lizard: the Anole. Have you ever seen one of those lizards that can blow a large bubble under its chin ("expanding its dewlap" is apparently the more scientific description). It also does highly entertaining push–ups to show its claim of territory (similar to what you see at beaches around the world during spring breaks). Anoles are described in a Wikipedia article (with photo of that dewlap thing). With a nod to Dave Barry, we'd like to see the word "dewlap" in a rock band’s name some day.
  • Another link covers other Anguillian fauna (birds and mammals specifically)
  • Not to be outdone, we found a reptile database; here is a link to it searching for Anguilla (dry reading, but how cool is a reptile database?). You can find ground lizards and anoles there.

Or search for Ameiva plei on your own.

Back to Anguilla Ground lizards. We've found that they like being fed fruit and bread, and are reasonably tame if fed consistently.
